Classic Versus Novelty Costumes
Novelty costumes have undoubtedly gained popularity over the years, with many people opting to look as original as possible when wearing fancy dress. Most costume shops and websites now offer novelty costumes, while other costumers specialise in original or unique fancy dress. Indeed, it’s now common for fancy dress partygoers to try to “outdo” each other with novelty costumes, or for groups to collaborate on novelty fancy dress. With so many novelty fancy dress options on the market – from “shark attack” costumes to costumes of favourite products, such as foods or drinks – it’s certainly easy to do.
Of course, reasons behind this rise in popularity vary. To begin, more people simply want to stand out in a crowd – and what better place to stand out than at a fancy dress party, wearing an eye-catching costume? Others simply want to make other partygoers laugh, or to express their own sense of humour through their fancy dress costume. Another reason is that fancy dress companies are getting more creative with their selections of costumes, prompting many consumers to opt for something different.
However, as popular as novelty costumes have become, the most classic of costumes haven’t lost their appeal. While many people do choose to go down the novelty costume route, countless others prefer to stick with the most basic or “typical” costumes – such as the classic cat, fairy, cowboy, or pirate costumes. Such costumes are both easy to find and easy to wear, and can be worn at a number of fancy dress events – whether it’s a house party, a hen or stag night, or a fancy dress event at work. Many people might choose classic fancy dress options, simply because they are both timeless and easy to wear.
Still, even “classic” costumes can be worn in a unique way – the most common example of this seen in the “sexy” version of fancy dress costumes. Cat, pirate, and fairy costumes are considered to be classic; but a sexy cat, risqué pirate, or playful fairy costume all offer a more modern way of wearing these classic looks.
So, while many people still love classic costumes, it’s now common to throw a “twist” into the look – much of the time, simply by changing a distinctive feature of the classic look. So it’s now easier than ever to stand out in a crowd, blend in, or perhaps pull off a bit of both.
